Are heat pumps taking over gas boilers?
This is one of the most important questions in the UK heating industry today — and the honest answer is that a mix of technologies will likely shape the future, rather than a single universal solution like putting heat pumps in every home.
🔥 Will heat pumps be in every house?
Not exactly — here’s the reality:
- Heat pumps (especially air-source) are central to the UK government’s net-zero plans, because they run on electricity and are low carbon at the point of use.
- The Boiler Upgrade Scheme and other incentives are helping increase adoption.
- But… heat pumps aren’t ideal for all homes:
- Older, poorly insulated properties may struggle without costly upgrades.
- They can be expensive to install.
- They work best with underfloor heating or large radiators, which aren’t standard in most UK homes.
So while many new builds and well-insulated homes will go the heat pump route, millions of existing homes are less suited without major retrofits.
🔄 What about natural gas and hydrogen blends?
- The UK still gets over 80% of its home heating from natural gas via boilers.
- The idea of blending hydrogen (e.g., up to 20%) into the gas grid is being trialled, with projects like HyDeploy and H100 in Scotland.
- Hydrogen has the potential to decarbonise gas boilers with less disruption to homes.
- However:
- Producing “green” hydrogen (from renewables) is energy-intensive and currently expensive.
- 100% hydrogen for home heating faces safety, infrastructure, and cost hurdles.
- The government paused plans for hydrogen home heating trials in 2024 to focus more on electrification.
✅ So what’s the future likely to look like?
A hybrid approach:
- Heat pumps in new builds, rural homes off the gas grid, and in properties that can be upgraded.
- Hydrogen-ready boilers for homes where heat pumps aren’t practical — potentially switching to hydrogen later, or operating with a hydrogen blend in the near term.
- District heating in dense urban areas using waste heat or renewable sources.
- Continued natural gas use in the short-to-medium term, with gradual reductions.

- You won’t be obsolete — but you will need to upskill.
- Gaining experience with heat pumps, hybrid systems, and hydrogen-ready appliances will be key.
- Retrofit knowledge, system design, and understanding heat loss calculations are becoming core skills.
