What trade pays the most?

When people ask, “What trade pays the most?” the answer often depends on experience, specialisation, and the sectors you choose to work in. However, when looking at overall potential—from how quickly you can start earning, to the long-term avenues for progression—gas engineering stands out as one of the most lucrative and versatile trades in the UK.

Unlike some trades that require years of apprenticeships or higher education, gas engineering allows you to start earning relatively quickly, often within 12 months of training. With just a few core qualifications and your Gas Safe registration, you can begin domestic work—installing, servicing, and repairing boilers, gas fires, and cookers. But that’s just the starting point. The real earning potential comes once you branch out into specialist sectors.

From Domestic to Commercial: Climbing the Pay Ladder

Starting in domestic gas work gives you a strong foundation and consistent income. Many engineers earn between £35,000 and £45,000 per year working on boilers, heating systems, and landlord gas safety checks. As you gain experience, the potential to increase your earnings grows significantly, especially if you go self-employed or build your own client base.

But once you’re confident in domestic systems, you can step into commercial gas engineering, where salaries and day rates are notably higher. Commercial engineers deal with larger installations in schools, hospitals, office blocks, and industrial settings. These jobs often require additional ACS modules, such as CODNCO1 (Changeover Domestic to Commercial), but the jump in income is well worth it. Experienced commercial engineers regularly earn £50,000 to £70,000+ per year, especially those who contract their services or work in high-demand areas like London and the South East.

Add-On Skills That Multiply Your Income

What sets gas engineering apart from other trades is the modularity and scalability of your career path. You don’t need to switch careers to increase your earnings—you just add qualifications and services.

  • LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas): Useful for engineers working in rural areas, caravan parks, and off-grid homes. Adding LPG certification broadens your client base and gives you access to well-paying, less competitive markets.

  • Oil Heating Systems: Still widely used in countryside homes and older buildings. Oil boiler servicing and installation is another bolt-on skill that adds value—and income.

  • Heat Pumps and Renewable Tech: With the government pushing towards net zero and schemes like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), more homeowners are switching to low-carbon heating. If you’re already a gas engineer, becoming MCS certified or F-Gas qualified to install air source heat pumps can dramatically increase your earning potential. Some installers report £1,500 to £3,000 per installation, depending on system complexity and whether you’re self-employed.

  • Hydrogen-ready Systems (Future-Proofing): The shift to greener energy doesn’t mean the end of gas—it means the start of a new phase. Hydrogen-ready boilers and hybrid systems are emerging, and engineers with traditional gas knowledge will be the ones best placed to service and install them.

How Does It Compare to Other Trades?

Let’s compare:

  • Electricians earn well, particularly in commercial or industrial sectors, but the training path is longer and the regulations (like 18th Edition and Part P) are more academic-heavy.

  • Plumbers can earn similar base wages to domestic gas engineers, but without the added premium gas work brings.

  • Carpenters, roofers, and general builders often face fluctuating demand, seasonal work, and lower starting pay.

  • Heat pump-only installers still need a background in plumbing or gas, and often require MCS accreditation and manufacturer-specific training before earning at scale.

In contrast, gas engineers have the best of both worlds: fast entry into paid work, and a career pathway that can scale with your ambitions.

Conclusion: Gas Engineering Offers the Best Long-Term Pay Potential

If you’re looking for a trade that offers fast-track entry, strong initial earnings, and high long-term income potential, gas engineering leads the way. You can start with domestic work, quickly gain your Gas Safe registration, and then diversify into high-paying areas like commercial gas, LPG, oil systems, and renewable heating.

In a market where skills are in demand and the UK’s energy landscape is evolving fast, gas engineers aren’t just surviving—they’re thriving. With the right qualifications and a drive to keep learning, it’s not uncommon for top-tier engineers to earn £70,000 to £100,000+ annually by combining services across multiple sectors.

So, if you’re asking which trade pays the most—not just today but five, ten, or twenty years down the line—gas engineering is arguably the smartest and most financially rewarding choice you can make.

I recently passed my ACS and used Gastec as part of my resettlement, When I initially rang up I spoke with Maria and she was very helpful and informative about the course. Then moving on to the course I had Alan and Surge as my trainers. They both take a lot of time and effort to pass on the mountains of knowledge they both have. I would like the say a massive thank you to the Gastec team. And I look forward to returning for more courses in the future.
