Starting your own gas business

Starting your own gas engineering business in the UK is an exciting step that can bring financial freedom, flexible working, and the satisfaction of building something that’s truly yours. While there are some startup costs involved, the overheads are manageable—especially compared to other trades or businesses—and the potential rewards far outweigh the initial investment. If you’re already qualified or soon to be Gas Safe registered, turning your skills into a business could be the smartest move of your career.

Startup Costs: A Manageable Investment

Launching a gas engineering business can typically be done with an initial investment of £5,000 to £10,000, depending on how much equipment you already have and how lean you want to start. This is remarkably low compared to other industries that require heavy machinery, stock, or rental space.

Here’s a breakdown of the main overheads:

  • Gas Safe Registration: This is mandatory and costs around £380 for new businesses, with additional costs for extra engineers or categories. It’s a professional badge that earns trust and is essential for legal operation.

  • Tools and Equipment: You may already have most of what you need, especially if you’ve worked for a company before. However, budgeting £1,500 to £2,500 for high-quality tools (pipe benders, manometers, flue gas analysers, etc.) is wise. These are one-time purchases that will serve you for years.

  • Van and Branding: A reliable van is a mobile workshop and an essential investment. Whether you lease or buy, expect around £200–£300 per month for a decent used van or £5,000–£20,000 for a purchase. Add some signage or vinyl wrap for visibility—an effective mobile advert that helps attract customers.

  • Insurance: Public liability insurance is crucial and typically costs £150 to £300 annually, depending on cover level. You may also want tool insurance and van insurance. Combined, these are still affordable and protect your livelihood.

  • Uniforms and Safety Gear: Presenting a professional image matters. Branded workwear, steel-toe boots, and safety gear might cost around £150 to £250, but help boost your credibility with customers.

  • Marketing and Website: You don’t need a huge marketing budget to start. A simple, well-designed website with booking/contact features can cost £300–£600, or you can use platforms like Wix or WordPress and build one yourself. Free listings on Google Business, Checkatrade, and local Facebook groups can bring early clients without big spend.

  • Accounting and Admin: You can use software like QuickBooks or Xero for under £20 a month, or hire a part-time accountant for end-of-year returns. Keeping costs lean at the beginning is entirely doable.

Why Starting a Gas Engineering Business Makes Sense

Now more than ever, qualified gas engineers are in demand—and being your own boss lets you take full control of that opportunity. As a self-employed engineer or small business owner, you can set your own rates, choose your hours, and focus on the jobs that interest you most. No more being tied to someone else’s diary, targets, or pricing structures.

Many engineers charge £60–£90 an hour or offer flat fees for services like boiler servicing, landlord gas safety certificates, and installations. If you complete just two or three jobs a day, your daily income can easily exceed £300–£500. Once your name is established locally, word of mouth and repeat business will keep your diary full.

You also have the freedom to expand your services. Starting with domestic gas work, you can later upskill into commercial gas, LPG, oil boilers, or renewable heating systems like heat pumps. Each new certification opens another revenue stream. As regulations and heating technologies evolve, having your own business means you can pivot quickly to stay relevant and competitive.

Moreover, running a gas engineering business offers excellent work-life balance. Want to work four days a week? You can. Want to work weekends and take weekdays off? No problem. Your time, your rules.

There’s also strong government backing for the low-carbon heating transition, including grants, training support, and incentives for heat pump installers. If you’re already established in the gas sector, this makes you perfectly positioned to benefit from this shift by adapting your business accordingly.
