Gas Safe Register is the official list of businesses that are legally permitted to carry out gas work. Every registered business employs an engineer(s), who is issued with a Gas Safe ID card. Not all engineers are qualified to do all types of gas work, so remember to check their ID card before any work is carried out.
If you need gas work done in your home or workplace, you can use the different search options on the Gas Safe website to look up engineers and businesses qualified to undertake the work you require.
If an engineer is unable to provide any ID card with a unique 7 digit code, do not let them undertake any gas work. Check any ID code by calling 0800 408 5500 or visiting the gas safe website.
The Gas Safe Register exists to protect homeowners, tenants and a business’ customers from the dangers of incompetent gas works. Gastec has existed to keep engineers trained and qualified for over twenty eight years.
Gas Safe has a duty to investigate reports of illegal or suspect gas work in order to pass the information to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The HSE prosecutes businesses or individuals found to have carried out illegal gas work. Unfortunately in 2023 illegal gas work is still a thriving opportunity, albeit illegal.
According to Gas Safe research, more than 1 in 6 gas appliances are classed as immediately dangerous, this means that they need to be disconnected immediately to protect life and property. This included 147,000 boilers, 75,000 gas fires, 32,000 gas meters and 645,000 examples of unsafe gas pipework. They also found that very few homeowners actually check that their engineer is Gas Safe registered. Gastec have seen over 10,000 engineers through our doors over the years, and we can happily confirm every single one of them has provided a Gas Safe card.
Finding a trustworthy engineer, the important part. Everyone has been stung before by someone within the trades. That is why it is vital the engineer you use is reactive and reliable. Having a boiler installed doesn’t stop there, without yearly servicing the warranty of the appliance becomes invalid. Finding a Gas Safe engineer that can answer your calls and questions is imperative, the last thing you want is to be left in the dark. The majority of Gas Safe engineers take pride in their work and keeping the customer informed and at ease. Talking to friends and family is always a great way to find a reliable local engineer. Gastec have been around for twenty eight years, take our advise when we say the biggest names never equal the best customer satisfaction. To put it simply, who do you trust to answer your leak at three in the morning? The corporate switchboard or the friendly plumber down the end of the road?
Every 5 years engineers must come back for re assessment on any gas or heating qualifications they hold, this ensures safe working practices are followed. The re assessment process is also an opportunity to catch up on any working practices that might have slipped past an engineer in the last five years. Gastec takes pride in keeping engineers up to date and ensuring they are fit to keep serving the public, re assessment gas courses are run weekly at Gastec training
