This gas safety assessment is designed to test the gas safety competence of an operative in Core Commercial gas work by means of practical knowledge, training and assessment.
Before taking a commercial gas Appliance or Pipework assessment such as TPCP1/1A or ICPN1, a candidate must first hold either Core Commercial Gas Safety (COCN1) or a change over Core Domestic Gas to Commercial (CODNCO1). Then, the remaining assessments can be taken.
COCN1:
This ACS Commercial Core Gas Safety COCN1 initial assessment course is a necessary requirement of the Nationally Accredited Certification Scheme for Gas Fitting Operatives (ACS), and is required by anyone working on commercial gas installations and appliances.
Course content typically includes:
Pipework inspection
Pipework scenarios
Unsafe situations (pipework)
Tightness testing
Installation of pipework and fittings
Purging pipework
Checking/setting commercial regulators
Appliance connection tightness test, purge and relight
Unsafe situations (appliances)
Characteristics of combustions
Gas safety devices and controls
NOTE* The following are not included within the COCN1 training or assessment and are part of a separate bundle or stand-alone course.Â
This assessment is the prerequisite for all other commercial natural gas safety assessments, such as
ICPN1
First Fix Commercial Pipework.
Installing pipework in excess of 35mm and testing up to 75mbar.
TPCP1
Tightness testing & purging of installation pipework exceeding 1m³ in volume, up to 16 bar operating pressure (natural gas) & 2 bar operating pressure for LPG.
TPCP1A
tightness testing and direct purging of installation pipework not exceeding 1m³ in volume, 40 mbar pressure and 150mm diameter natural gas only.
ICAE1
First Fix Commercial Appliances.
Installing commercial appliances and equipment
CIGA1
Indirect Fired Heating Appliances.
Installing, commissioning, servicing and fault-finding on indirect fired heating appliances
CDGA1
Direct Fired Heating Appliances.
Installing, commissioning, servicing and fault-finding on direct fired heating appliances.
CORT1
Radiant Plaque and Radiant Tube Heaters.
Installing, commissioning, servicing and fault-finding on radiant plaque and tube heaters.
A four-day course which is inclusive of two days of training and two days of assessment.
This course is designed for anyone seeking COCN1 ACS Assessment.
These consist of open-book written assessments. The Open Book assessments permit the use of approved reference material such as the Gastec manual to obtain answers.
All written assessments contain either multiple choice questions or true/false statements.
Workshop activities on live appliances are required for COCN1 ACS to be undertaken.
Tests the gas safety competencies in core areas of gas work common to non – domestic heating installations.
Course content:
Before a candidate can be allowed to sit for the core commercial gas ACS assessments, they need to provide evidence of completing a certified training programme such as the Gastec Managed Learning Programme. After the Managed learning programme is complete, sufficient proof of onsite working experience that is supervised by an accredited and Gas Safe Registered engineer is required to populate a portfolio. With the portfolio complete you will be awarded an Initial Gas Qualification (IGQ) which will allow you to undertake ACS assessments.
CATEGORY 1 APPLICANTS
Experienced gas fitting operatives seeking certificate renewal and/or assessment and certification to extend their work range.
CATEGORY 2 APPLICANTS
Individuals with relevant gas experience, and other individuals with relevant qualifications and experience in similar job disciplines, for example:
plumbers and installers of piped gas other than LPG or Natural Gas engineers from the domestic oil industry, electrical appliance service engineers and marine engineers/fitters
heating and ventilation engineers and refrigeration engineers/fitters
Individuals from outside the United Kingdom who have relevant qualifications and experience
CATEGORY 3 APPLICANTS
Individuals without previous experience are entering the industry for the first time.
ON SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION
Upon receipt and verification of the Application for Certification and Assessment documents, UK Certification will be the body to award the certification issued for your personal use.
