ACS Gas Assessments

OVERVIEW

A short guide to the Accredited Certification System (ACS) which is the means by which gas operatives are assessed to prove their competence in gas safety. The law requires that all persons working on gas installation must be safe to do so and registered.

The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) oversees the Accredited Certification Scheme (ACS) and ensures that organisations meet internationally agreed standards for certification.

ACS (Accredited Certification Scheme) is the means by which gas operatives are assessed to prove their competence in gas safety. Subject to certain provisions, the law requires all persons working in the gas industry to be competent to do so. Unless a person has been assessed through the above scheme they have not proved competence and are not legally able to carry out any work on a gas appliance or system.

Upon successful completion of ACS gas assessments, a certificate usually valid for five years is issued as proof that competence has been demonstrated. Details of all operatives that are deemed competent are also kept by the registration body Gas Safe Registry.

WHAT IS ACS GAS QUALIFICATION?

The ACS (Accredited Certification Scheme) gas qualification is a recognised standard for gas engineers in the United Kingdom. This certification process ensures that gas engineers possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and competence to work safely and effectively within the gas industry. Holding an ACS qualification is a prerequisite for registering with the Gas Safe Register, which is a legal requirement for all gas engineers in the UK.

The ACS qualification encompasses various critical aspects of gas engineering. These include core gas safety, which covers the fundamental principles and practices necessary to ensure safe gas work. Additionally, it involves combustion performance analysis, which is essential for assessing the efficiency and safety of gas appliances. The qualification also includes appliance assessments, ensuring that engineers can competently install, service, and maintain a range of gas appliances. By achieving the ACS qualification, gas engineers demonstrate their commitment to maintaining high standards of safety and professionalism in their work.

DO I NEED TRAINING BEFORE THE INITIAL ACS GAS ASSESSMENT?

If you are undertaking any element for the very first time you will require training no matter the scenario. This training will ensure you get up to scratch on all modern legislation and practices within your chosen sector of work, before the initial ACS assessment.

Individuals must undertake an assessment to evaluate their qualifications for gas-related services, and this is often categorised as an initial assessment.

You may also need to show proof of working with that appliance or system in the real world, this is not always the case but is set for specific courses if you are extending your qualifications into a new sector in the gas industry.

PREPARING FOR YOUR ACS ASSESSMENT

Preparing for your ACS assessment is crucial to ensure successful completion and to demonstrate your competence as a professional gas engineer. Here are some essential tips to help you get ready:

  • Review the ACS Assessment Process: Familiarise yourself with the format and content of the ACS assessment. Understanding what to expect can help reduce anxiety and improve your performance.
  • Complete Necessary Training: Ensure you have undergone the required training and have a comprehensive portfolio of evidence to support your application. This training will help you stay updated with the latest industry standards and practices.
  • Practice in a Simulated Environment: Enhance your skills and knowledge by practising in a simulated environment, such as a training centre or an online platform. This hands-on experience can be invaluable in preparing you for the actual assessment.
  • Check Gas Safe Register Requirements: Review the Gas Safe Register’s eligibility criteria to ensure you meet all the necessary requirements. This step is crucial for your registration process post-assessment.
  • Consider Refresher Courses: If you feel the need to update your knowledge and skills, consider undertaking a refresher course or additional training. This can help reinforce your understanding and ensure you are well-prepared for the assessment.

By following these preparation tips, you can approach your ACS assessment with confidence, ensuring a higher likelihood of successful completion and advancing your career as a gas safe engineer.

ASSESSMENT OR RE-ASSESSMENT

Operatives that hold a current ACS certificate do not need to go through the full initial assessment procedure but are eligible to attend a shortened re-certification assessment which is both quicker and cheaper. Areas of competence are broken down into work areas and a wide number of assessments are available to enable competency to be demonstrated in all areas of gas utilisation, including domestic natural gas systems.

Operatives who do not hold a current ACS certificate are not eligible to attend the shortened assessment and will need to be fully assessed for all work types that they intend to carry out.

Gastec runs acs re-assessment courses every month across all areas of work.

WHAT WILL I GET IF I CAN PROVE COMPETENCE? AN ACS CERTIFICATE?

Upon receipt and verification of the Application for Certification and Assessment documents, UK Certification will send you a certificate and record card stating all qualifications. In all cases, the certificate and record card are issued for your personal use but remain the property of UK Certification and may be withdrawn if the conditions of issue are not complied with.

Lost certificates and record cards can be replaced by application, and Gastec can guide you on who to contact. All UK Certification certificates and record cards issued (including replacements) are subject to a fee.

CERTIFICATIONS RENEWING

Most ACS certificates are valid for five years. Your certification body or Gastec will usually send you a reminder email, indicating the date your certificate expires. Any certification will not be valid if the expiry date has passed. appliance/pipework-related categories will not be valid if the core certificate has expired. E.G
CCN1 – EXPS 2021
CKR1 – EXPS 2027
The above core element (CCN1) is expired, therefor the CKR1 is NOT valid.

WILL I GAIN GAS SAFE REGISTRATION ON COMPLETION OF THE ASSESSMENT?

No. Once you have proved competence and hold the appropriate certificates you are able to apply for Gas Safe registration. Further details of the application procedure are available from the Gas Safe Register.

DO I NEED TO BE GAS SAFE REGISTERED?

Self-employed engineers and employers need to be registered with the Gas Safe Register by law before they can carry out gas work. If you work for a company they should be Gas Safe registered and should provide a list of all operatives they employ that can be shown to any customers via the Gas Safe portal.
