Whats happening with Net zero

The idea of blending hydrogen with natural gas for heating and cooking in the UK has gained traction, but its feasibility and timeline are still being evaluated. The UK government and energy companies have been conducting trials to assess whether a 20% hydrogen blend in the gas grid could help reduce carbon emissions without requiring immediate, significant changes to consumer appliances.

Here’s a quick summary of where things stand:

Trials and Testing:
Multiple hydrogen blending trials are ongoing, like the HyDeploy project, which tested a 20% hydrogen blend in Keele University’s gas network. The trials aim to understand how hydrogen behaves in existing gas infrastructure and whether it’s safe and practical for widespread use.

Government Support and Regulation:
The UK government supports hydrogen as part of its net-zero strategy, with a target of 10 GW of low-carbon hydrogen production by 2030. While they haven’t given the final go-ahead for hydrogen blending on a national scale, they are supporting pilot projects to gather data on safety, emissions reductions, and costs.

Safety and Appliance Compatibility:
A blend of 20% hydrogen is expected to be compatible with most modern gas appliances. However, scaling this to a national level would still require significant regulatory and safety oversight.

Economic and Environmental Benefits:
Hydrogen blending could help reduce emissions from domestic heating, which is a significant source of carbon emissions in the UK. But the approach is seen as an interim measure rather than a final solution for decarbonising heating, as pure hydrogen or electric heat pumps offer even more substantial emissions reductions.

The future is exciting for all Gas Safe engineers out in the field as we look to District heating, Hydrogen blended mains and heat pump systems as alternate methods of heating our homes.
