Becoming a Gas Engineer at 40: Here’s How to Make the Switch

Changing careers at 40 might sound like a daunting leap, but for many, a career change is the start of a rewarding new chapter. If you’ve been considering a career switch to becoming a gas engineer, you’re in excellent company. The UK faces a skilled labour shortage, particularly in trades such as gas engineering, creating high demand for professionals in this field. Better yet, this is a career that offers job security, competitive pay, and flexibility.

If you’re ready to pursue a fresh and exciting route, or even just exploring your options, this blog will help you understand the opportunities available and how to overcome potential challenges. By the end, you’ll see why it’s never too late to become a gas engineer at 40.

A Story of Change and Success

Imagine this – you’ve spent 15 years in a corporate office job, but you realise it no longer excites you. Meet Sarah. At 41 years old, she decided to retrain as a gas engineer after years of dissatisfaction in her role in account management. Starting wasn’t easy, and financial concerns loomed, but she was determined to create a fulfilling career for herself. She found that many training providers offered financing plans and local grants to help cover course fees, making the transition more manageable.

After completing a condensed training programme and gaining her certifications, Sarah now works as a self-employed gas engineer in Leicester. Today, she earns more than her corporate salary, enjoys the flexibility to spend time with her family, and takes great pride in solving real-world problems.

Sarah’s story isn’t unique—thousands of mature professionals successfully transition into trades each year. With dedication and the right guidance, you could achieve the same.

Why Choose Gas Engineering?

Gas engineering is an attractive career option for several reasons, whether you aim to become a gas engineer or a heating engineer:

  • High Demand: The UK has an ongoing shortage of qualified gas engineers, which means job security for those willing to enter the trade.
  • Competitive Salary: Newly qualified gas engineers can earn around £30,000 per year, with experienced professionals making over £50,000. Self-employment could increase this further.
  • Variety in Work: Whether repairing boilers, installing heating systems, or conducting safety checks, no two days are the same, especially with the ongoing reliance on natural gas in many homes.
  • Opportunity for Growth: Gas engineers often add certifications in areas like renewable energy, allowing them to expand skills and income opportunities.
  • Flexibility: Self-employment is common in this trade, meaning you could set your hours and scale your workload to fit your lifestyle.

Skills and Qualifications Needed

While anyone can train as a gas engineer, there are skills and qualifications you’ll need.

Core Skills:

  • Practical problem-solving abilities
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Good communication and customer service skills
  • A willingness to work with your hands and learn technical tasks

Qualifications:

To legally work as a gas engineer in the UK, you’ll need to:

  1. Complete a recognised gas engineering course that includes both theory and practical components.
  1. Achieve your Gas Safe Register certification to become a gas safe registered engineer, the official qualification required to work with gas appliances.

Some courses combine training with direct work experience, which is ideal for building confidence on the job.

Training Options for Gas Engineers

Thankfully, retraining at 40 doesn’t mean you need to go back to school full-time. Modern training programmes offer flexibility to fit into busy lives. Modern training programmes also include modules on renewable energy technologies, such as heat pumps, ensuring you are prepared for the future of the industry.

  1. Vocational or Trade Schools

Dedicated trade training providers, such as Access Training Academies and South & City College Birmingham, offer gas engineering courses tailored to career changers. Many offer part-time or fast-track options.

  1. Apprenticeships

Although traditionally aimed at younger learners, there are some apprenticeship programmes open to mature individuals. These combine on-the-job training with classroom learning, often paid as you train.

  1. Online Classes and Modular Learning

For ultimate flexibility, look for online gas training programmes that include remote classes and modular coursework. While you’ll still need to complete practical training in person, this option allows you to work around your other commitments.

Gas Safe Certification and Training

Becoming a gas engineer involves more than just completing a training course; it requires obtaining Gas Safe certification. This certification is crucial as it ensures you are qualified to work safely and legally on gas appliances and supply systems. The Gas Safe register is the official list of gas engineers who have met these stringent qualifications.

To become Gas Safe registered, you must complete a comprehensive Gas Safe training course. This course covers the installation, service, and maintenance of various gas appliances, including gas boilers, cookers, and fires. Additionally, it emphasizes the safety procedures and regulations that gas engineers must adhere to, ensuring safe working practices.

Gas Safe certification is not a one-time achievement. To remain on the Gas Safe register, engineers must renew their certification every five years. This renewal process involves completing a refresher course and passing the relevant assessments to stay current with the latest technologies and techniques in gas engineering.

Building Your Skills and Experience as a Gas Engineer

As a newly qualified gas engineer, building your skills and experience is essential for career advancement. One effective way to do this is by working for a reputable company that offers robust training and development opportunities. Many housing associations and private contractors provide apprenticeships and training schemes specifically designed for gas engineers.

Taking on private work is another excellent way to enhance your skills and gain independence. This approach not only boosts your confidence but also increases your earning potential. However, it’s crucial to ensure you have the necessary insurance and certifications to undertake private jobs legally and safely.

Staying up-to-date with the latest technologies and techniques is vital in this ever-evolving field. Attending industry events and conferences can provide valuable opportunities to network with other professionals, learn about new developments, and gain expert advice. These events are instrumental in keeping your knowledge and skills sharp, ensuring you remain competitive in the job market.

Overcoming Challenges

It’s normal to feel a little apprehensive when starting something new. However, with careful planning, these common challenges can be managed:

Financial Constraints

Tuition fees for training programmes vary, but many providers offer financing plans to help cover course fees, and local grants or bursaries may also be available. Additionally, the potential for earning a strong wage post-qualification can outweigh the upfront costs.

Time Management

If you’re juggling a family or other commitments, consider part-time or flexible courses. Breaking your training into manageable sections can ensure you stay on track without overwhelming your schedule.

Adapting to Learning

If it’s been years since you last studied, that’s okay! Gas engineering training is designed to be practical and hands-on, which makes it accessible to a variety of learners. Learning alongside peers can also help build confidence.

Finding Job Opportunities as a Newly Qualified Gas Engineer

Finding job opportunities as a newly qualified gas engineer can be challenging, but several strategies can increase your chances of success. One effective method is registering with job agencies that specialize in gas engineering jobs. These agencies often have extensive lists of job vacancies and can offer valuable advice on the application process.

Networking is another powerful tool. Attend industry events, join trade associations, and connect with other gas engineers on social media platforms. Building a robust professional network can open doors to job opportunities that might not be advertised publicly.

Many training providers, such as Able Skills, offer job placement services for newly qualified gas engineers. These services can assist you in finding employment and provide support throughout the application process, making the transition into your new career smoother.

Lastly, consider apprenticeships or training schemes with reputable companies. These programs offer valuable hands-on experience and often lead to full-time employment, providing a solid foundation for your career as a gas engineer.

Resources and Support

When starting your new career, tapping into resources and networks can make the process smoother.

  • Industry Organisations:
  • The Gas Safe Register (gas registration and certification body).
  • The Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors (for advice and standards).
  • Online Forums:
  • Join platforms like Screwfix Community or Reddit’s r/Plumbing for peer support.
  • Mentorship:
  • Consider finding a mentor or shadowing a practising gas engineer to gain real-world insights.

Additionally, many training centres provide career counselling and job placement assistance—don’t be afraid to ask for help!

Inspiring Success Stories to Motivate You

Take Paul, for example. After spending 20 years as a delivery driver, Paul found himself looking for a job offering better financial stability and intellectual engagement. Today, at 45 years old, Paul runs a thriving heating business in Manchester after completing his gas engineer training. Not only has he found professional success, but he also enjoys being his own boss and the flexibility that comes with it.

Paul’s and Sarah’s journeys are proof that it’s never too late to rewrite your story.

Take the First Step Towards a Fulfilling Career

Your next opportunity is waiting. Becoming a gas engineer at 40 is not just realistic; it’s rewarding. The industry needs skilled, motivated professionals like you to meet growing demand.

Start by researching training programmes in your area or contacting career advisors who specialise in trades. The sooner you begin, the sooner you can carve out a new path.

Remember, a rewarding career doesn’t have an age limit. Your story is still unfolding—this could be the chapter where everything changes.

I recently passed my ACS and used Gastec as part of my resettlement, When I initially rang up I spoke with Maria and she was very helpful and informative about the course. Then moving on to the course I had Alan and Surge as my trainers. They both take a lot of time and effort to pass on the mountains of knowledge they both have. I would like the say a massive thank you to the Gastec team. And I look forward to returning for more courses in the future.
