The future of Kerosene

The future of kerosene (heating oil) for heating in the UK is uncertain and likely limited due to the country’s net-zero emissions target by 2050. Kerosene is a fossil fuel with a high carbon footprint, making it a target for gradual phase-out, especially in residential and commercial heating. Here are some key points on what to expect:

1. Planned Phase-Out of Oil-Fired Heating

The UK government has set out a commitment to phase out fossil fuel heating in buildings as part of its Heat and Buildings Strategy. This includes a target to end the installation of new oil boilers in off-grid homes from 2026, which are common in rural areas that aren’t connected to the gas grid.
Existing kerosene heating systems won’t be forcibly removed, but government incentives and regulations are pushing homeowners toward more sustainable alternatives.

2. Shift to Low-Carbon Heating Alternatives

Heat Pumps: Air source and ground source heat pumps are seen as key alternatives for rural areas and off-grid homes, with government subsidies available to help offset installation costs.
Biofuels: As a potential transition fuel, the industry has been exploring the use of biofuels (such as HVO, or hydrotreated vegetable oil) as a direct replacement for kerosene in existing systems. However, HVO is still relatively costly and limited in availability.
Hybrid Heating Solutions: Hybrid systems that use a combination of electricity and kerosene (or HVO) might offer a temporary solution for off-grid homes transitioning away from kerosene.

3. Economic and Environmental Pressures

Rising Costs and Carbon Taxes: Increasing carbon taxes and levies on fossil fuels are likely to make kerosene more expensive. These costs will be passed on to consumers, further incentivizing a switch to low-carbon alternatives.
Supply and Availability: As demand decreases, the supply infrastructure for kerosene may become less reliable, especially as oil companies divest from fossil fuel heating to focus on renewables.

4. Financial Incentives and Support for Transition

The UK government has introduced schemes like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, offering grants for renewable heating systems (e.g., heat pumps), which can ease the financial burden for homeowners switching from oil heating.
Local authorities and government bodies may continue to provide additional incentives as part of the national commitment to net-zero, potentially accelerating the shift away from kerosene.

5. Future Role of Bio-Kerosene or Sustainable Liquid Fuels

While kerosene itself is unlikely to have a place in the UK’s heating future, bio-kerosene or synthetic fuels might offer a low-carbon alternative. However, these options are still in early stages of research, and their commercial viability and availability remain uncertain.
In short, kerosene heating is set to be phased out over the coming years as the UK transitions to low-carbon solutions. Homeowners using kerosene heating should consider upgrading to alternatives like heat pumps or biofuels as these become more accessible and supported by government incentives.
